Starting the adventure

After many years of dreaming, learning and studying about Africa my family and I are finally packing up and moving there.  Of course, Africa is a jolly big place so let's be specific: we are going to live in Zambia, right in the middle of Sub-Saharan Africa, just up from Botswana and a little to the right.

In the time since we made the decision we've been visiting friends and relatives to say goodbye.  It's been so much fun seeing people, and we've often come away wondering how we could have left it so long since we last saw them!

Yesterday we saw my Great Aunty Rosina, my Grandmother's sister-in-law.  She's a chatty lady with a lot of interesting stuff to say.  I learned more about my family: when Grandma went to live in Jamaica aged 10; her missionary work in China and being chased out by the Communists; coming home and marrying Grandpa and taking on his 3 children.  My desire to live outside the UK goes far, far back, I'm proud to say.

Of course it wasn't just about my family.  Unfortunately there were a few medical stories, and from that and what else I hear I think it should be mandatory for anyone seeking to look after the elderly to spend at least 3 days as an old person before they're allowed to start work; have their balance affected, their sight and hearing impaired and to sit in a wheelchair.  That'd help them understand how they'd want to be treated!

On the way home we had the surreal experience of the M25 at a complete standstill because of...wait for it...escapee cows.

So, this week we're meeting friends from work and church and ending the week with a BBQ at one of Steve's friends from school.
